Support Military Kids with a Simple Vote

Our friends at Dog Tags For Kids need your help so we're sending out a call to action.

Squidoo is giving away $80,000 to charity on their "$80,000 Squidoo Charity Giveaway" page. There are many worthy causes but we are asking for you to pick this one for the kids.

All you do is visit the page and vote for Dog Tags for Kids. No need to register and it doesn't cost you a thing.

What makes Dog Tags for Kids so very special is that they are 100% volunteer and use 100% of the money they receive to provide dog tags to the kids of deployed service members. They take NO administrative fees.

Though all the causes are worthy of your time and your vote, Dog Tags for Kids doesn't have the fame, publicity, marketing or sheer numbers some of the others do so, every vote they get is $2.00 to their organization and means 4 dog tags that will go to military kids with a parent stationed in a war zone.

The Dog Tags for Kids Project is dedicated to helping United States Service men and women in most harm's way connect with their children at home. Specially engraved Dog Tags in the appropriate service color are provided FREE to the service members for their children. Dog tags are engraved with a message from the parent who is serving like: "With Love From Dad, U.S. Army, Iraq 2008."

Head on over to and vote for Dog Tags for Kids. When you do, 4 more military kids will get a dog tags from mom or dad to hold on to until they're safely home.

Halloween In a Box for Our Troops

The Family Readiness Group (FRG) for the HHC 1-153, 39th Brigade in AR is working on a huge Halloween Carnival to build care packages to send over for their 200 soldiers.

The theme is Halloween in a Box so if you can send Halloween cards and candy it would be greatly appreciated. If it’s easier to send gift cards from Walmart or Target for the candy or other items, to make it cheaper, that would be fine.

The FRG needs to have everything by the 13th of October, so that they can assess how much they have and what they’d still need to purchase.

Please email Rebecca at army24wife@gmail.com to participate in this project and to receive the mailing address to ship your Halloween goodies.

Rash of Suicides Hits Houston Army Recruiters

Rash of Suicides Hits Houston Army Recruiters

An alarming number of suicides among Houston-based Army recruiters -- including two in recent weeks -- has prompted calls by a senator and veterans' advocates for closer scrutiny of high-stress recruiting duty during wartime.

Staff Sgt. Larry G. Flores Jr., 26, and Sgt. 1st Class Patrick G. Henderson, 35, are the fourth and fifth recruiters at the Houston Recruiting Battalion to kill themselves since 2001. Both men belonged to the battalion's Tyler Company, and both were combat veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Clearly, there's a problem," said David Rudd, a former Army psychologist and psychology chair at Texas Tech University. "Somebody needs to look and see if there's a broader national problem outside of this one battalion. Is it a problem placing these combat veterans in recruiting positions?"

President Calls Upon Nation to Honor Gold Star Mothers

Sep 26, 2008
By Army News Service

President Bush this week proclaimed Sept. 28 as "Gold Star Mother's Day."

Army leaders are reminding the Army family of these inspirational mothers, their patriotic service and their sacrifices both for the recognition day, upcoming events in October and throughout the year.

"Throughout our history, the men and women of the armed forces have put our nation's security before their own, doing their duty in the face of grave danger," Bush said in the proclamation. "On Gold Star Mother's Day, we pay solemn tribute to the mothers of the patriots lost serving this great nation.

"In a letter to the Army family, Secretary of the Army Pete Geren and Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr., joined the president in saluting Gold Star Mothers.

"Gold Star Mothers are extraordinary women who -- in the face of utmost loss -- remain steadfast in their dedication to the memory of their children and their service to America's noble cause," wrote Geren and Casey in a message to the Army. "Having so sacrificed, their example is an inspiration to all.

"The Army will launch a comprehensive program in October to fulfill its moral obligation to surviving family members. Among components of the program, Army Casualty Assistance Centers will receive increased resourcing, and the Army will ensure that those who work with survivors are well trained. The short- and long-term needs of survivor families will be met by expert benefit specialists, financial counselors skilled in estate planning, and support coordinators for as long as needed.

"As unselfish extensions of their fallen sons and daughters, Gold Star Mothers serve our communities and families as models of grace and strength," wrote Geren and Casey. "The Army, along with our nation, honors them and renews our commitment to uphold the sacred legacy of their fallen children."

President Bush Proclamis 9/28 Gold Star Mother's Day

Gold Star Mother's Day, 2008
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Throughout our history, the men and women of the Armed Forces have put our Nation's security before their own, doing their duty in the face of grave danger. On Gold Star Mother's Day, we pay solemn tribute to the mothers of the patriots lost serving this great Nation.

Gold Star Mothers inspire our Nation with their deep devotion to family and country. These extraordinary women serve their communities, dedicate their time to helping members of our Armed Forces and veterans, and bring comfort and hope to families whose loved ones laid down their lives in the defense of our liberty. Nothing can compensate for their sacrifice and loss, yet Gold Star Mothers demonstrate tremendous courage and resolve while working to preserve the memory and legacy of all our fallen heroes.

On this day, we honor our country's Gold Star Mothers and remember their sons' and daughters' noble service and great sacrifice. We offer them our deepest gratitude and our most profound respect, and we ask for God's blessings to be upon them and their families.

The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, 1936 (49 Stat. 1895 as amended), has designated the last Sunday in September as "Gold Star Mother's Day" and has authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in its observance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Sunday, September 28, 2008, as Gold Star Mother's Day. I call upon all Government officials to display the flag of the United States over Government buildings on this special day. I also encourage the American people to display the flag and hold appropriate ceremonies as a public expression of our Nation's sympathy and respect for our Gold Star Mothers.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

GEORGE W. BUSH

eMOM and Tatango Team Up to Connect Troops with Loved Ones via SMS

Tatango, the Seattle-based SMS service firm, has partnered with Miami-based eMail Our Military (eMOM) to connect deployed military service members with their loved ones back home through text messaging.

Tatango has created an interface exclusively for military personnel, which easily allows any service member to instantly update all their loved ones on events of the day, advancements and most importantly, their safety.

“We’re extremely excited about this partnership, as it allows us to do our part in supporting the troops who have been deployed overseas,” says Derek Johnson, CEO of Tatango. “By working closely with Trish and her team at eMail Our Military, we were able to modify our current website to accommodate the needs of military service members without access to a mobile phone.”

Prior to the Tatango and eMOM partnership, there were limited ways for military personnel to simply and effectively connect with friends and family in the United States while overseas. Now, with one message directly from a computer, all loved ones on their contact group will be updated at the same time via a text message. Not only can service members send a message to everyone’s mobile phone, they will also receive immediate gratification, as replies to the text message are routed directly to their account for viewing.

“Our mission at eMail Our Military has always been to improve the lives of our troops,” says Trish Forant, president of eMOM. “Our partnership with Tatango has created another innovative way for us to further our organization’s mission, as well as providing peace of mind for our service members and their families.”

Military service members can create a free Tatango account with a valid military email address at http://tatango.com/partners/military

Blog World Expo: Milblog Conference Wrap Up

It was incredibly exciting to be in attendance at the Milblog Conference track of Blog World Expo 2008. What a difference it was to be involved in this track because the attendees and panel speakers were not of the echo chamber flavor. Most folks were not communications or marketing professionals, but the backbone of the military community. It was refreshing to sit in the audience and just listen to these passionate people.

Instead of representing Communicators Anonymous, I was at Blog World Expo this year representing my day job employer, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES or commonly referred to as the BX/PX). AAFES is developing new media tools to better communicate with our military community. What better place to go to begin to understand the milblog community than this conference?

The morning began with opening remarks from JP Borda. He had a fan club in the crowd...his loving family was there to support his first public speaking event. JP, just as his writing style, is charismatic and warmed up the crowd with an overview of what has occurred in the milblog community in the past year.

LTG William Caldwell then addressed the audience with opening remarks via video. By empowering his staff to tell the military story, LTG Caldwell expressed the necessity to confront change with change. "Information is currency," said LTG Caldwell. It was evident that he means what he says, but led to the question of the day - Is this openness to new media trickling down to tactical level?

LTG Caldwell requested "what happens in Vegas (at the Milblog Conference) is heard around the world." (Not sure he meant the Penthouse party.) Thanks to eMail Our Military (eMOM), this message is being syndicated to a larger military audience! Be assured, you were well represented.

The first panel addressed the relevance of milblogs. Panelists included, Ward Carrol of Military.com, Phil Carter of Intel Dump and Obama for America, Matt Burden of Blackfive, Greyhawk of The Mudville Gazette and MilBlogs and CJ Grisham of Soldier's Perspective. Undoubtedly, the milblog is still needed, but roles are evolving. There remains a tension between op sec and enlightened information, however, dialogue between is open. To CJ, Wordpress remains his psychologist and his blog is relevant as long as the author deals with his demons. For Matt, his blog and mission is evolving to more main stream media content and that scares him. All agree the stories are not just about the war, but of the American patriot family and good of our country.

The second panel addressed the topic nearest to my heart and mission, milblogging as a community. Panelists included Melinda of SpouseBUZZ and Most Certainly Not, Beth of Soldier's Angels and Fuzzilicious Thinking, Mrs. Greyhawk of The Mudville Gazette and MilBlogs, Karen of Parents Zone and Proud Liberal Army Wife and Sarah of SpouseBUZZ and Trying Not To Grok. Moderator, Melinda, should be a stand-up comic. She had me chuckling the entire session! The relevance question from Panel #1 was also answered by these women. Spouses and parents are going to the Internet seeking comradery in the hot topics too personal and delicate to discuss with the family and friends in their "real" lives. The need for the military story to be told to the extended military family (parents) was also stressed. The virtual connection has proven to be a vital support element to a community stationed all over the world.

Before the third panel began, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General James Cartwright, addressed the audience. Similar to LTG Caldwell, General Cartwright expressed his desire to empower individuals with tools to communicate truth.

"The vision of human liberty unfolds with each post." -General James Cartwright

The third panel was a special edition of DOD LIVE Bloggers Roundtable with guests Pete Geren, Secretary of the US Army and MG Kevin Bergner, Chief of Public Affairs, Army. Secretary Geren stressed new media as an important opportunity. He told the audience he includes blog updates in his morning briefings and is encouraging his staff to go beyond blogging and embrace other appropriate tools such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. The need to communicate to the extended military family is paramount.

Once again, the issue of bringing new media openness and training to a more tactical level was addressed. The issue was recognized and Secretary Geren emphasized his desire to move the military away from a risk adverse culture, embrace new media voices as the best ambassadors and increase tolerance for these communication methods. General Bergner agreed with this direction and informed the audience his staff was drafting new policies to encourage this direction.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the final panel of the day addressing the new cadre of war reporters because I had to jump on a plane home. A huge thank you to Andi for organizing the event. It was an honor to be in the presence of the community I serve. It is also a privilege to share my day with the community of eMail Our Military.

Austin Honored for Troop Support

Culture of Troop Support Earns Top Award for Texas Capital

By Sara Moore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15, 2008 – The Defense Department is recognizing the city of Austin, Texas, as being one of the most supportive employers of reserve-component servicemembers in the nation.

Austin is one of 15 employers selected to receive the 2008 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The city earned the award through its many support activities for employees who serve in the National Guard or reserve.

The city has policies in place that provide differential pay to activated employees for up to 15 months as well as 15 days of paid military leave annually for military training. The city trains all leaders and supervisors on the legal requirements to support employees in the National Guard and Reserve, and recently created a position that is dedicated to ensuring servicemembers are processed back into the employment sector upon return from deployment.

While employees are activated or deployed, supervisors and co-workers stay in touch with them, and the city hosts “send off” and “welcome home” ceremonies. Supervisors also help the families of deployed employees with home and vehicle maintenance and other projects.

In 2007, the city contracted with several organizations to provide families services such as psychological and emotional counseling, assistance with finance management, and referrals to support groups and the city’s employee assistance program.

Lek Mateo, a Public Works Department supervisor for Austin and first sergeant in the Texas Army National Guard, nominated the city for the Freedom Award because of the exceptional support he and other employees have received, he said. Mateo was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004, and said during his deployment his co-workers sent his unit care packages and school supplies for the Iraqi children, and his supervisors assured him his job would be waiting for him when he got back.

“I can't say enough about the city of Austin other than this is a wonderful city to work for, and I am thankful for having great bosses and co-workers who really support me and allow me to perform my military duties,” he said.

Mateo praised the city for giving employees ample time to attend military training and for recruiting military veterans from nearby installations. The city held an event during Veterans Day to recognize all the veterans in the city work force and asked them to participate in a parade to recognize their service, he said.

“The city is a fantastic organization to work for in that they openly support their employees that serve in the National Guard or reserves and also recognize the employees that are veterans,” he said. “Without our family and employer support, we as citizen-soldiers could not do our military duties.”

The city of Austin will receive the Freedom Award along with 14 other companies in a ceremony Sept. 18 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center here. The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to recognize exceptional support from the employer community.

Listen to the podcast

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Mr. Vice President; Secretary Gates; Madam Speaker; Justices of the Supreme Court; members of my Cabinet and administration; members of Congress; Admiral Mullen and the Joint Chiefs; Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, a first responder on September the 11th, 2001; directors of the Pentagon Memorial Fund -- Mr. Chairman, congratulations; families and friends of the fallen; distinguished guests; fellow citizens: Laura and I are honored to be with you.

Seven years ago at this hour, a doomed airliner plunged from the sky, split the rock and steel of this building, and changed our world forever. The years that followed have seen justice delivered to evil men and battles fought in distant lands. But each day on this year -- each year on this day, our thoughts return to this place. Here, we remember those who died. And here, on this solemn anniversary, we dedicate a memorial that will enshrine their memory for all time.

Building this memorial took vision and determination -- and Americans from every corner of our country answered the call. Two young architects in New York City came up with the design. A foundry near St. Louis cast the steel. An Iraqi immigrant in Illinois gave the metal its luster. And citizens from across our nation made contributions large and small to build this graceful monument.

The Pentagon Memorial will stand as an everlasting tribute to 184 innocent souls who perished on these grounds. The benches here bear each of their names. And beneath each bench is a shimmering pool filled with the water of life -- a testament to those who were taken from us, and to their memories that will live on in our hearts.

For the families and friends of the fallen, this memorial will be a place of remembrance. Parents will come here to remember children who boarded Flight 77 for a field trip and never emerged from the wreckage. Husbands and wives will come here to remember spouses who left for work one morning and never returned home. People from across our nation will come here to remember friends and loved ones who never had the chance to say goodbye.

A memorial can never replace what those of you mourning a loved one have lost. We pray that you will find some comfort amid the peace of these grounds. We pray that you will find strength in knowing that our nation will always grieve with you.

For all our citizens, this memorial will be a reminder of the resilience of the American spirit. As we walk among the benches, we will remember there could have been many more lives lost. On a day when buildings fell, heroes rose: Pentagon employees ran into smoke-filled corridors to guide their friends to safety. Firefighters rushed up the stairs of the World Trade Center as the towers neared collapse. Passengers aboard Flight 93 charged the cockpit and laid down their lives to spare countless others. One of the worst days in America's history saw some of the bravest acts in Americans' history. We'll always honor the heroes of 9/11. And here at this hallowed place, we pledge that we will never forget their sacrifice.

We also honor those who raised their hands and made the noble decision to defend our nation in a time of war. When our enemies attacked the Pentagon, they pierced the rings of this building. But they could not break the resolve of the United States Armed Forces. Since 9/11, our troops have taken the fight to the terrorists abroad so we do not have to face them here at home. Thanks to the brave men and women, and all those who work to keep us safe, there has not been another attack on our soil in 2,557 days. (Applause.)

For future generations, this memorial will be a place of learning. The day will come when most Americans have no living memory of the events of September the 11th. When they visit this memorial, they will learn that the 21st century began with a great struggle between the forces of freedom and the forces of terror. They will learn that this generation of Americans met its duty -- we did not tire, we did not falter, and we did not fail. They will learn that freedom prevailed because the desire for liberty lives in the heart of every man, woman, and child on Earth.

We can be optimistic about the future because we've seen the character and courage of those who defend liberty. We have been privileged to live amongst those who have volunteered to spread the foundation of peace and justice, which is freedom.

Seven years ago this morning, police officer Cecil Richardson was on duty here at the Pentagon. He saw the terror that day with his own eyes. He says on some nights he can still smell the burning metal and smoke. Not long ago, he wrote me saying, "I remember the reasons we fight. I remember the losses we felt. And I remember the peace we will have."

That day of peace will come. And until it does, we ask a loving God to watch over our troops in battle. We ask Him to comfort the families who mourn. And we ask Him to bless our great land.

And now it's my honor to dedicate the Pentagon Memorial. (Applause.)

Patriot Day, 2008

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

September 11, 2001, was etched into America's memory when 19 terrorists attacked us with barbarity unequaled in our history. On Patriot Day, we cherish the memory of the thousands of innocent victims lost, extend our thoughts and prayers to their families, and honor the heroic men and women who risked and sacrificed their lives so others might survive.

Since 9/11, we have recognized the threat posed by terrorists to the safety of the American people and worked to protect our homeland by fighting terrorists abroad. We are confronting terrorism by advancing freedom, liberty, and prosperity as an alternative to the ideologies of hatred and repression. Our Nation pays tribute to our courageous men and women in uniform serving around the world and the devoted members of our law enforcement, public safety, and intelligence communities at home who work night and day to protect us from harm and preserve the freedom of this great Nation.

Seven years ago, ordinary citizens rose to the challenge, united in prayer, and responded with extraordinary acts of courage, with some giving their lives for the country they loved. On Patriot Day, we remember all those who were taken from us in an instant and seek their lasting memorial in a safer and more hopeful world. We must not allow our resolve to be weakened by the passage of time. We will meet the test that history has given us and continue to fight to rid the world of terrorism and promote liberty around the globe.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2008, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day. I also call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and remembrance services, to display the flag at half-staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent Americans and people from around the world who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Dear Mothers, From a Marine

You may have seen this one circulating since 2001 but if you haven't, it's worth a read.

Dear Mothers, From a Marine:

America holds its breath as it awaits word from the president or congress on whether or not we are going to wage an all out war on terrorism. Some two million Americans serve in the nations military. That means two million mothers anxiously wait and wonder as to the destiny of their sons and daughters.

Indeed it was tragic what happened on September 11th, 2001. Such an act is incomparable to anything that has taken place in our history. The event has been likened to Pearl Harbor, however on that day in 1941 it was this nations Naval fleet that was attacked, not thousands of unsuspecting civilians on a beautiful morning in New York.

All we have been told by our commander in chief is to Be ready. You will be called upon, and you will make us proud. These words electrified a group of Marines watching a television receiving a broken satellite signal at three o'clock in the morning in the middle of the Mediterranean. The thought of finally utilizing years of training in the name of our country in a worldly cause made those Marines feel as though they were needed, and the training not wasted. An enormous sense of pride rushed through the ship and caused everyone to take their jobs, their weapons, and their lives more seriously.

Undoubtedly, those very same words sent tremors through the hearts of these two million mothers. One who is not can only imagine the thoughts and fears of a mother. Most likely those of us who are not will never be able to even fathom that level of fear derived from that level of love.

President Bush and others have said it will be a long campaign and more likely than not a costly one. Costly. Another word. This is subject not approached with a word such as "billions". When costs in these matters are evaluated, words like few, some, and acceptable losses are used. A few hundred? Maybe a few thousand? Some of them?

These mean nothing to a mother whose son or daughter is one of the few, and the loss is hardly acceptable. The words become ones of resentment and bitterness, and the mothers cry "why did I have to pay?" History has shown there no sound equaled to that of the mothers' collective cries. They pain those at home and those abroad. Their sympathy is felt by mothers across the world watching on their televisions thankful to still have their sons and daughters.

Mothers, I do beg of you to understand. We do not seek violence or death. I look at America and remember the dozens of times I flew from city to city on commercial airliners. My biggest concern was what was being served for lunch. Such will never be the same for me again. When the world trade center is rebuilt I will never be able to look upon it without shuddering and seeing the ghastly images we have born witness to in the past week. But my children will never truly know what we endured as children should not. The next generation should know the word "terrorism" as a fantasy. Something that took place in another land many years before and should never fall prey to the fear that flows through us now. The world, this nation, this military now has the direction and the power to put an end to this. Not to merely achieve justice for what has happened but to prevent anything like this from happening again.

Mothers, your sons and your daughters now have the power to help and to make this a reality. It was us who signed the contract swearing to "protect this country from enemies foreign and domestic." This generation thanks you for sparing us the fears of a global nuclear war with the U.S.S.R. We thank you for not having to worry about a raid through Europe by the Warsaw Pact. We thank you for fighting the war against communism and raising us in an almost entirely democratic world. Now this generation has its own fight. This generation is ready.

We will lay down our lives if it comes to that. If it takes me and a thousand or five thousand of my brethren to make that possible so be it. If that is what it takes to know that when OUR sons and daughters board a plane their biggest fear is turbulence, then it will be done. We will make that sacrifice. Despite what many believe, our generation is aware of what that word means and we will make silence the criticism that has characterized our generation.

Mothers, your sons and daughters fight for you, and for their country. Your sons and daughters love you. Your sons and daughters wish only for what we have wanted since our conception. We wish to make you proud.

All my love,

Lance Corporal Timothy G. Apel USMC
0331 Machine Gunner

Fact Sheet: The Seventh Anniversary of 9/11

Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, President Bush recognized the threat posed by terrorists and took action to protect Americans and defeat violent extremism. Because of the actions taken by President Bush, America is safer, more secure, and winning the War on Terror. Seven years later:

50 million people have been liberated, and two totalitarian regimes have been removed;

The al Qaeda network has been weakened;

We have not experienced another attack on American soil;

Our military has been transformed to meet the challenges of the 21st century;

We have expanded our intelligence capabilities to confront today's enemy; and

We have created new and essential institutions needed to wage the War on Terror, including the Department of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

We Have Been On The Offense Against Our Enemies Since The 9/11 Attacks

President Bush has kept us safe by weakening al Qaeda and its affiliates. Hundreds of al Qaeda leaders and operatives have been captured or killed, including 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, who is currently awaiting trial by a Military Commission. The United States also apprehended several leading figures in the al Qaeda East Africa network through intelligence sharing and military action.

Since 9/11, more than two dozen terrorists and supporters have been convicted in the United States of terrorism-related crimes. Several key financiers and facilitators of terrorism have been isolated and captured, while more than 400 individuals and entities have had their assets frozen and isolated from the U.S. financial system.

President Bush took the fight to violent extremists in Iraq and Afghanistan and across the world so that we do not have to fight them on American soil. The United States and its coalition partners removed al Qaeda's safe haven in Afghanistan and al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq, including in its former stronghold of Anbar Province. The United States also acted to prevent al Qaeda safe havens from emerging in the Horn of Africa and Southeast Asia.

There have been no attacks on American soil since 9/11, and the United States and our allies have disrupted key terrorist plots around the world. The President has built a 90-nation coalition to fight terrorism. The United States has partnered with nations in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America on intelligence sharing and law enforcement coordination to break up terrorist networks and bring terrorists to justice. Some of our counterterrorism victories include the following:

September 2007: German authorities disrupted a terrorist cell that was planning attacks on military installations and facilities used by Americans in Germany. The Germans arrested three suspected members of the Islamic Jihad Union, a group that has links to al Qaeda and supports al Qaeda's global jihadist agenda.

September 2007: Danish authorities disrupted a cell, which included an al Qaeda-trained individual, planning terrorist attacks using explosives.

June 2007: Four individuals were charged with plotting to blow up major fuel tanks at JFK Airport. Three of the individuals have been arrested, and the United States is pursuing extradition of the fourth.

May 2007: The FBI arrested six al Qaeda-inspired individuals plotting to kill soldiers at Fort Dix Army Base in New Jersey. The plotters purchased weapons for the attack, which they had been planning since January 2006.

August 2006: British authorities disrupted a plot to blow up passenger airplanes flying from the UK to the United States.

The United States supported the creation of a democratic Afghan government and fostered broad international support for Afghanistan through NATO and the U.N. Afghanistan has ratified a new democratic Constitution with strong protections for women's rights and civil liberties; held the country's first Presidential election; and held the first free and fair legislative elections since 1969. Today, six million Afghans are attending school, and 85 percent of Afghans have access to basic health care. The United States has committed over $10 billion in 2008 and 2009 for political and economic development. The Afghan government is preparing for the next round of elections in 2009 with U.S. and international assistance.

Iraq is now a young democracy and an ally in fighting terrorists. The President's decision to send an additional 30,000 soldiers and Marines into Iraq as part of the "surge" has resulted in improved security conditions that have opened up space for political and economic advances. Iraq has seen meaningful progress, but this progress is fragile and there will be challenging times ahead. This success has fostered the appropriate conditions for Iraqi authorities to take the lead in all security operations for Anbar province.

President Bush persuaded Libya to dismantle its Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) programs and renounce terrorism, leading to a normalization of our relationship with Libya. Just last week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made a historic visit to Libya, making her the highest ranking U.S. official to visit the country since 1957.

The President worked with the international community to isolate the regime in Tehran, and won support for three U.N. Security Council resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran because of its failure to suspend its uranium enrichment and other proliferation sensitive activities.

President Bush has teamed with international partners to prevent the proliferation of WMDs. We have expanded international efforts to deny terrorists access to advanced conventional weaponry and to WMDs, their delivery systems, and related materials.

President Bush Has Transformed The Institutions And Tools To Fight Terror And Protect America

The President worked with Congress to implement reforms and create the institutions needed to wage the War on Terror. The President also integrated and unified intelligence gathering; disrupted terrorist financing; and created new legal and law enforcement frameworks to combat terrorism and deny safe haven to terrorist groups. The President:

Transformed the United States military to meet the challenges of the 21st century. President Bush provided our military with the tools, equipment, and resources to combat terrorism and other new challenges. We started moving American forces from Cold War garrisons in Europe and Asia so they can deploy more quickly to any region of the world to confront emerging threats.

Strengthened our ability to protect the American people by directing the most extensive security reorganization of the Federal Government since 1947. President Bush and his Administration have enhanced our homeland security and counterterrorism infrastructure through the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), the Terrorist Screening Center (TSC), the Homeland Security Council (HSC), and U.S. Northern Command, a Department of Defense combatant command focused on homeland defense and civil support.

DHS consolidated 22 Federal entities and 180,000 employees under one roof to foster a comprehensive, coordinated approach to protecting the U.S. homeland. DHS and FBI, in partnership with Federal, State, and local authorities, created a national network of 66 fusion centers in 48 states to facilitate information sharing on terrorist threats and operational planning.

The NCTC leads our Nation's effort to combat terrorism at home and abroad by analyzing the threat, sharing that information with our partners, and integrating all instruments of national power to ensure unity of effort.

The ODNI coordinates and integrates and leads the work of the Intelligence Community as a unified enterprise, led by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), to ensure information is shared among intelligence and law enforcement professionals.

The TSC maintains the Government's consolidated list of suspected terrorists and individuals with terrorist links and helps get this information into the hands of State and local law enforcement.

HSC ensures coordination of all homeland security-related activities among executive departments and agencies and promotes the effective development and implementation of homeland security policies.

Modernized the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to provide the tools needed to win the War on Terror and protect America from another attack. This vital legislation allows our law enforcement and intelligence professionals as well as future administrations with the ability to quickly and effectively monitor the plans of terrorists outside the United States, while respecting the privacy and liberties of the American people.

Strengthened our defenses to protect the American people by implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. Together with Congress, the President restructured and reformed the Federal government to focus resources on counterterrorism and took the necessary steps to improve the Nation's homeland security.

The President Has Implemented Programs To Secure Our Homeland And Fight The War On Terror

The President and his Administration have increased border and transportation security. President Bush is implementing an effective system of layered defense by strengthening the screening of people and goods overseas and by tracking and disrupting the international travel of terrorists. The President:

Created the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). TSA instituted a process to screen every commercial air passenger in the country, launched credentialing initiatives to strengthen our ability to identify passengers, and expanded the Federal Air Marshal program. We have hardened cockpit doors, armed pilots to defend the flight deck, and strengthened air cargo security.

Enhanced U.S. port security and increased scanning for radiological and nuclear threats. The President coordinated Federal, State, local, and industry port partners through the establishment of formalized Area Maritime Security Committees and Plans that clarify roles and responsibilities. Today, more than 98 percent of all containers entering the supply chain via U.S. seaports are scanned for potential radiological and nuclear threats - prior to 9/11, zero percent were scanned.

Increased containerized cargo screening overseas. We have worked with our international partners to employ the Container Security Initiative in 58 foreign seaports, screening 86 percent of all U.S.-destined containerized cargo being screened overseas before it enters the U.S. supply chain.

Increased border security and interior enforcement funding more than 110 percent and equipped the Border Patrol with better technology and new infrastructure. We have also added more than 8,000 border patrol agents. The Administration has constructed hundreds of miles of fencing and vehicle barriers along America's southern border and is moving toward the goal of 670 miles by the end of the year.

Nonprofits Awarded Grants for Innovative Programs

By Fred W. Baker III
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5, 2008 – Newsman’s Own awarded a combined $75,000 in grants to 15 nonprofit organizations for their innovative volunteer efforts to improve military quality of life during the company’s ninth annual awards ceremony, held at the Pentagon here today.

Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, helped present the awards alongside executives from contest sponsors Newman’s Own, Fisher House and the Military Times Media Group.

“The clever ideas, the way the ideas were brought forth, the things that were meaningful to people who had family and knew they would be meaningful to others who were family” impressed him about the entries, Cartwright said.

The vice chairman commended the innovation of the programs and said that the recipients ran the gamut from large, mature organizations to smaller, family-run groups.

Cartwright said that the various organizations’ efforts were symbols that volunteerism is still alive.

“The coming together of the civilian community and the military, the finding of family, the opportunity to acknowledge service, and to acknowledge those who are willing to serve, and the sacrifices that the families make for those who are willing to serve and do so, to see that come together” shows that volunteerism is still alive and well in America’s communities, Cartwright said.

The president of Newman’s Own Inc., Tom Indoe, said volunteers form the “backbone” of charities. “As you’ll see, all of these charities that we recognize today start with the volunteers,” Indoe said. “They are the threads that hold the fabric of these charities together. And it’s the volunteers that bring so much good and goodness to our military families.” Indoe said that Newman’s Own, a food company famous for its salad dressing, pasta sauces and popcorn, got involved with Fisher House Foundation about 10 years ago while looking to donate to a charity that helps military families. All profits from Newman’s Own products are given to charities.

There were 120 entries for the 2008 contest. Judges evaluated the entries based on the organization’s impact to the community, creativity and innovation. The emphasis of the competition was on organizations that support deployed servicemembers or their families, according to officials. The competition started in 2000 and has recognized 114 programs with awards totaling more than $500,000.

This year, the Freedom Calls Foundation received the top $15,000 grant award. The foundation provides videoconferencing and telephone calls free from centers in Iraq and Kuwait, connecting servicemembers to their families in the United States, England, Germany, Guam and Okinawa.

John Harlow from Morristown, New Jersey, said he started the Freedom Calls Foundation after watching a newscast in 2003 in which he saw a report of a National Guardsman who had a $7,000 phone bill from trying to keep in touch with his family during his deployment to Iraq. “I was shocked to hear that burden had been placed on his family,” Harlow said.

After some research, Harlow said he found that it was not unusual for troops deployed to have extraordinarily high phone bills. An exclusive contract at rates of up to 44 cents per minute added up to $100 million per year in calls to families at home, he said.

“I didn’t think that was right,” Harlow said.

So, Harlow formed a foundation to provide phone calls and videoconferencing services to servicemembers and their families. The operation was launched in April 2004. Now the foundation delivers more than 1 million minutes per month in telephone calls and 2,000 video conferences every month to servicemembers and families. The videoconferences are mainly for “milestone” family events such as births, graduations, anniversaries, and even weddings. Harlow works with 10,000 sites across the United States and hopes to add more sites.

“It’s those families and those deployed – they’re the reason we do this,” Harlow said. “It’s been a life-changing experience to work with these families. They’re some of the most giving, most humble people that I’ve ever met in my life … and they deserve everything that we can do for them.”

The $10,000 award winner was Operation Wounded Warrior sponsored by the American Legion Riders of Grants, New Mexico. Operation Wounded Warrior was started by a group of American Legion Riders after a plea three years ago for comfort and hygiene items for troops who had been wounded in Iraq. The mission expanded to include family members who were at their bedside. Each year, a truck loaded with personal and comfort items is escorted by riders to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and its four Fisher Houses.

The $5,000 award winners include:

-- Wounded Warrior Assistance Program sponsored by Operation First Response, Inc. of Culpeper, Va. The program supports wounded warriors and families with personal and financial needs. Financial aid varies from rent, utilities, vehicle payments, groceries, clothing, and travel expenses.

-- Parent and Child Resource Center sponsored by Osan Parent Network on Osan Air Base, Korea. The network provides services for families at Osan Air Base. Activities include daily playgroups, arts and crafts and other events, daily stroller walk and runs, a breastfeeding support group, a parenting support group, a communication network and family advocacy.

-- The SHARE Initiative sponsored by the Shepherd Center of Atlanta. The program assists the rehabilitation, recovery and community re-entry care for soldiers who have sustained a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury while serving on active duty in Afghanistan or Iraq.

-- Snowball Express, based in Costa Mesa, Calif. The program provides an all-expense-paid gathering for the children of servicemembers who have died since Sept. 11, 2001. In 2007, the $3.5 million dollar event provided more than 1,100 children a weekend of fun in Anaheim, Calif.

Get Ready for Freedom Walk - Sept 7th

In 2005, Pentagon employees wishing to commemorate the attack on the Pentagon and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, created what has become a new national tradition—the America Supports You Freedom Walk. Over 15,000 people walked from the Pentagon to the National Mall to pay tribute to those who died; renew their commitment to freedom and the values of our country; and honor our veterans, past and present. The response from people across the country who learned of that first America Supports You Freedom Walk was overwhelming. The following year, in addition to the National Walk, 135 ASY Freedom Walks sprang up across the country. Last year, the number continued to grow as Americans everywhere embraced the idea. In fact, 255 ASY Freedom Walks took place in every state in the nation, as well as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Italy, Guam, Japan, Kuwait and Canada.

Last year in Sebring, Ohio, 10-year-old Colton Lockner hosted 1,000 people for his second annual America Supports You Freedom Walk. In Paramus, N.J., 12-year-old Joey Rizzolo organized the first annual walk in his community. Mayor Jim Tedesco and U.S. Congressman Scott Garrett along with 400 Paramus residents joined the walk. Joey has written a manual to teach students his age how to organize an ASY Freedom Walk. All 50 of the Killeen, Texas Independent School District’s campuses held ASY Freedom Walks and Dani Lamana, whose brother died in the Pentagon attack, organized an ASY Freedom Walk in Baton Rouge, La. An FBI agent who helped at the Pentagon on 9/11 organized an ASY Freedom Walk in Bolling Green, Ky. In Oxford, Pa., a military spouse whose husband is deployed in Afghanistan organized her second annual walk. And in Aventura, Fla., mall walkers held an America Supports You Freedom Walk and ceremony to remember those who lost their lives and those who serve to protect us now.

America Supports You Freedom Walks are becoming a part of the fabric of our country. The demonstration of communities gathering together to remember this significant day and those protecting our freedoms is felt by our Armed Forces both at home and abroad. We encourage each city to plan a walk that best fits and exemplifies their community. Walks can be held early in the morning, during the lunch hour or after work. They can be held on September 11, or around the date, depending on local traffic patterns. However they are organized, the America Supports You Freedom Walks are a wonderful opportunity for cities, work places, schools, or groups of citizens to gather together and remember this significant day and those protecting our freedom. America Supports You Freedom Walks are also an excellent tool to use as a history lesson for students.

AAFES to Celebrate Military Retirees who “Still Serve” with Savings and Sweepstakes

MEDIA CONTACT: Chris Ward

DALLAS – The Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) is extending special retirement benefits to former Soldiers and Airmen who shop their exchange during the annual “Still Serving” weekend Sept. 5-7.

Invitations to this event, included a “Salute to Your Service” sales flyer, are already hitting the mailboxes of more than three million Army and Air Force retirees, active duty and National Guard and Reserve members worldwide. Inside, the exchanges’ most distinguished shoppers will find exclusive savings on a wide variety of categories, including $50 off any HP notebook over $799, up to $50 off a set of new tires and $2 off a 16-piece family meal at Popeyes Chicken.

“Every time retirees choose to shop at the exchange, they not only save money and don’t pay sales tax, but they also provide needed support for Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs, facilities and non-appropriated fund construction projects,” said AAFES’ Chief Marketing Officer Mat Dromey “Without their support, it would not have been possible for AAFES to return more than $272.7 million to Armed Forces MWR programs and services last year.”

In addition to the savings at “brick and mortar” exchanges, authorized shoppers will also find details of the “Salute to Your Service” sweepstakes at http://www.afes.com/. A random drawing will be held to select the winners of a Tom Tom GO 720 GPS, Apple iPod MP3 player, Kodak digital camera, Sony digital picture frame and a Microsoft Zune MP3 player, among other prizes.

Authorized exchange customers can learn more about activities planned for the weekend of Sept. 5 at their specific exchange by calling their local store manager. Contact information for all AAFES BXs and PXs can be found online http://www.aafes.com/ by clicking on the “store locator” link.

Moody Airmen Prepare to Provide Hurricane Gustav Rescue Support

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- 1st. Lt. Sean Ruane, 41st Rescue Squadron HH-60G Pave Hawk co-pilot, and Capt. Adam Rudolphi, 41st RQS HH-60G command pilot, perform a pre-deployment inspection on a 41st RQS aircraft here Aug. 31. The 41st RQS is preparing to enter storm ravaged areas of the Gulf Coast with other rescue and support units of Moody's 23rd Wing as part of the national response framework for Hurricane Gustav.

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- During the Labor Day weekend, Airmen from the 23rd Wing have been keeping their eye on Hurricane Gustav, and an ear to the phone.

"We've been alerted by the United States Northern Command to prepare for operations as part of the national response framework for Hurricane Gustav," said Col. Kenneth E. Todorov, 23rd Wing commander. "The wing is fully energized to support and carry out any and all rescue operations. Our crews are the finest rescue crews in the world -- combat and peacetime."

All of the wing's groups, from the 23rd Medical Group to the 563rd Rescue Group at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., have been doing their part over the holiday weekend to ensure the wing is ready to respond to the call.

"We've been reviewing medical records to ensure tasked personnel are medically qualified to go," said Col. Loraine H. Anderson, 23rd Medical Group commander.

Hundreds of Moody Airmen could find themselves responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav within the next few days.

"Our flight crews are ready," said Col. Darryle J. Grimes, 347th Rescue Group commander, "As soon as the word comes down, we can move in to assist the Gulf Coast."

Depending on the needs of the potential rescue operations, the 23rd Maintenance Group could deploy approximately 120 maintainers from Moody AFB and Davis-Monthan AFB.

In addition to providing search and rescue capabilities along with mission support personnel, Moody could possibly house up to 300 Department of Defense personnel from surrounding bases who may be affected by the storm.

"Although we hope that in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav the Gulf Coast won't require assistance from our rescue teams, the Flying Tigers are ready to support," said Col. Todorov. "As we showed in 2005 when the wing was responsible for more than 1,700 lives saved, we are here to answer our nation's call."
