2009 - Year of Major Change in Iraq

Regional elections, U.S. drawdown and shifting military role among uncertainties
By Robert H. Reid - The Associated Press
Posted : Tuesday Dec 30, 2008 18:01:59 EST

BAGHDAD — The U.S. military will take its first steps toward ending its combat role in Iraq in 2009, after a sharp drop in violence this year — and Iraqi voters will choose leaders in elections that could provide a key clue to whether the security gains will endure.

Those events will make 2009 a watershed year in Iraq — perhaps the most significant since the U.S.-led invasion nearly six years ago.

If things go well, Iraq could be on its way to relative stability — if not the liberal, Western-style democracy foreseen when the U.S. led the 2003 invasion to oust Saddam Hussein.

But failure could lead to a new spiral of violence. The risk of failure is high.

The suspicion and bitterness among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds that fueled the conflict still run deep, even though attacks have fallen by 80 percent since last March, according to the U.S. military.

Iraq remains a shattered country, where millions lack security, clean drinking water, jobs, electricity — and hope.

Nevertheless, Iraq’s prospects may be better than at any time since the war began.

In 2008, U.S. and Iraqi forces gained the upper hand in the fight against Sunni and Shiite militants, reducing violence in Baghdad and other cities to levels not seen in five years. The U.S. military mission is already more peacekeeping than fighting a war.

The coming year will tell whether the Iraqis can build a political system in which the different religious and ethnic groups feel power is shared fairly.

Regional elections Jan. 31 in 14 of Iraq’s 18 provinces, and nationwide parliamentary balloting by the end of 2009, offer Iraqis a chance to select leaders they believe represent their interests.
Most Sunnis and many Shiites boycotted the last regional elections in January 2005. Many Iraqis also believe the national parliament chosen later that year no longer represents their interests, and they are eager for change.

Much will depend on how the new U.S. administration manages the draw-down of its 150,000-strong military force here. President-elect Barack Obama wants to shift resources to Afghanistan and the economic crisis at home.

Under the newly approved U.S.-Iraq security pact, all U.S. troops must pull out of Iraqi cities by the end of June and leave the country entirely by the end of 2011. Already, the Pentagon plans to send home about 8,000 troops by February.

Obama wants all combat troops out of Iraq by the spring of 2010, leaving a residual force of trainers, air controllers, advisers and logistics soldiers until the end of the mission.

The incoming president, however, has promised to consult his commanders and the Iraqi government before ordering withdrawals.

Britain plans to remove the last of its 4,000 soldiers by June.

U.S. commanders and some analysts worry that a quick departure could trigger more violence because Iraqi security forces may not be ready to take on more responsibility.

“Our really crucial role is to act as peacekeepers to police an uneasy cease-fire,” said Stephen Biddle of the Council on Foreign Relations. “Iraqis do not yet trust one another enough for indigenous Iraqi security forces to stabilize such a fearful country.”

Publicly, U.S. officials speak in glowing terms about improvements in the Iraqi security forces. Privately, some senior military officers doubt the Iraqis will be ready to fight on their own by the time the U.S. leaves in 2011.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have highlighted the Iraqi army’s success in rousting Shiite militants from Basra and Baghdad’s Sadr City district last spring.

But success came only after mutinies in Iraqi ranks, and needed strong U.S. logistical and air support plus political intervention by Iran, which helped mediate a cease-fire in Basra.

Less has been said about the Iraqi army’s performance in the northern city of Mosul, where U.S. and Iraqi forces are struggling to curb Sunni militants, including al-Qaida in Iraq.

“Iraq and the U.S. are reaping some of the consequences of past reports that exaggerated the progress in developing the Iraqi security forces,” former Pentagon analyst Anthony Cordesman wrote in a recent study.

Cordesman, a frequent visitor to Iraq, said many U.S. and Iraqi politicians have taken “exaggerated reporting too seriously” and need to understand how far the Iraqis “still have to go.”

Major tests will come around the two elections, when U.S. commanders believe insurgents will accelerate attacks to try to disrupt the campaign. Some Iraqi politicians worry that the government will use the police to intimidate opposition candidates.

Ahead of the voting, old political alliances are already fraying. Both Sunni and Shiite parties face major challenges to their claim of leadership of their two religious communities.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s party is trying to win over followers of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. His position has weakened since his Mahdi Army militia lost its bases in Baghdad’s Sadr City and Basra in fighting last spring.

Al-Maliki has complained that the autonomy enjoyed by his Kurdish partners since 1991 has weakened the central government. He has called for amendments to the constitution — something that alarms the Kurds.

Sunnis who turned against al-Qaida fear the Shiite-led government will forget its promises to give them jobs in the government or the security forces.

Biddle believes there is still a “serious danger” that major violence could return “if we and the Iraqis fail to follow the necessary policies.”

“If we do this, I think there’s an important opportunity for sustainable stability,” he said. “If we don’t, then I think we take a grave risk of losing what has been gained.”

Miami Shores Students Help Troops

During our Holiday Love project we visited a local school where students from the Green Club volunteered to sign holiday cards for the troops serving at home and abroad.

Students received community service hours and had some fun at the same time.

Students signed the cards with messages of hope and inspiration. Some included cute sayings that only kids could come up with like "you are the butter to my toast" and decorated the envelopes to make them a little more cheerful.

The following photos show the students having a great time during this project.

We look forward to working with these great students again for upcoming projects. They were a fantastic bunch of amazing kids.

Wishing Our Troops Happy Hanukkah

How Lucky are we that we have lights so we can see
Although the day is done
What a miracle that a spark lifts these candles out of the dark
Every evening, one by one
Until the end of hanukkah, of hanukkah.
With the jingle bells and the toys
And the TV shows and noise
It's easy to forget
At the end of the day
Our whole family will say
These words for Hanukkah

Baruch atah Adonai, eloheinu melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu B'mitz'votav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Hanukkah.

Light the candles for Hanukkah, for Hanukkah
We remember how Maccabees fought so all of us could be free
And so we celebrate on this festival of the lights
There's a joyful time every night
But we illuminate the candles of Hanukkah, of Hanukkah

From everyone at eMOM to you, Happy Hanukkah!

A Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble,
I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said
"Its really all right, I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

eMOM Volunteers Make a Difference for Troops

eMail Our Military's volunteers were hard at work this holiday season creating custom cards and letters for our troops. Some even held card signing parties and get togethers to spread holiday cheer to our service members station across the globe. We had companies and organizations, schools and churches, girl scouts, boy scouts, cub scouts and brownies all spending a little extra time giving back to those who serve our great nation so unselfishly.

Were you a part of the eMOM effort to get holiday cards, letters and care packages to our troops this season? Do you have great photos to share? Send them to us and see them here.

Included in this post are just a few photos from some local volunteers. We hop they'll inspire you!

You can still do something great with very little effort. Grab your webcam and create a video message for our troops, or write out a holiday message and have someone snap a photo of you holding it up. We'd love to post these messages here to provide holiday cheer and inspiration for our troops.

Below are a few of the cards that were created by this group of local crafty gals. They were all beautiful, original, unique and very much appreciated!

Soldier Wish Grants Wishes for our Troops

Soldier Wish Campaign, a nonprofit initiative that allows everyday people to grant the wishes of America's heroes this holiday season. It's a unique and easy way in which citizens can give back to our heroes deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan and to their families in a safe and secure manner online.

“We’re excited and honored to offer this opportunity to the American public to say ‘thank you’ to the troops,” said Jared Still, SVP and Co Founder of Wishy. “While there are many other worthy programs, the Soldier Wish Campaign allows the men and women of our armed forces to select exactly what they and their families need to make their lives a little bit easier. It also allows individuals to choose exactly how they’ll help specific men and women in uniform.”

Through Soldier Wish, individual service members and their families create Wish lists online. These Wish lists are viewable on their site. Individuals can then browse through these lists and purchase items via the site's secure servers. All personal information including the soldier’s shipping addresses, their families addresses, and the buyer’s credit card information are encrypted and kept confidential from the other party.

The Soldier Wish Campaign is one more way that troop supporters can say “Thank You” to our men and women in uniform for the sacrifice that they and their families make every day for our freedom.

eMOM Members Get Creative for the Troops

All the mail has arrived and now the fun begins. Opening all the packages, sorting the cards into piles, counting how much we've received, snapping photos or scanning those that are really exceptional to share. Oh yes, that's the best part of all - sharing the photos with you! We wish we had the time and resources to scan them all because they're all really works of art and we know you put so much time into making them special.

If you have photos from your card signing events be sure to let us know and we'll tell you where to send them so we can post them on our site. We'll share some of the ones we've taken and some of the ones we've already received from volunteers who were having tons of fun making cards for our troops.

From now until Christmas we'll be sharing some of the photos we've taken of the incoming and outgoing packages to our troops along with some of the creative works of "heart" we received. We hope you'll enjoy the photos and that they help kick off the holidays right and bring you a little extra holiday cheer.

Here's a sweet photo from one family that not only sent in cards but they created a holiday letter on their computer with great word art and photos of the whole family, including pets. They also sent in yummy snacks for the troops. eMOM members are truly creative!

PA Community Sends Over 450 Cards to Troops

This giant package was sent to us by twitter friend & troop supporter @Gabbricha. It's amazing how big a role new media and social networking has played this year in supporting our troops. We are humbled by your giving spirit!

The outer label on this great big box said it was 25 lbs. (Believe me, it felt like it too when I was unloading it from the truck). We couldn't wait to open it up and see what was inside for our troops.

What a surprise we received when we did! It contained over 450 cards, banners, phone cards and cans of nuts for our troops. This wonderful group of volunteers even got together and sent a check for $100 so we could send out even more holiday packages this year!

This amazing package was put together by several girl scout troops, pre-schools, Harrest Christian Academy, Baggaley Elementary School, Dana's family and many friends within her community in Latrobe, PA.

What a special group of folks to do something so nice for our troops this holiday season. Our service members are going to be thrilled to know that there are so many thoughtful and caring folks thinking about them this holiday season - and always.

(Notice that each bundle is 50 cards)

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone from this community who took time from their busy schedules to be a part of making the holidays a little brighter for our troops. Thank You!

* You can still help support our troops this holiday season. Membership is not required to participate but we'd love it if you took a minute to register with eMOM to correspond with service members one-on-one. *

Snowman Poop for the Troops

Click the photo to view fullsize

Have some fun this holiday season and get creative. Here's a sweet treat you can share with your favorite service member in their care package.

We purchased some mini-marshmallows so we could create these neat little "Snowman Poop" packs. Sense of humor is definately required!

We found some cute clip art and printed the little poem and slipped one in each ziplock bag with the mini-mashmallows (aka Snowman Poop). What a fun idea for a stocking stuffer too! We know our troops will get a kick out of them. (Don't forget to add some hot chocolate packets to your care packages so they'll have something to put all these mini-mashmallows in!)

Snowman Poop Poem Says:

I hear you've been naughty,
So listen, here's the scoop...
I'm running short on coal this year,
So you get "Snowman Poop"
Love, Santa

Reindeer Poop For the Troops

Click the photo to view full size

Here's a fun idea you can include in your care packages, it's called Reindeer Poop and a sense of humor is required.

On one of our trips to purchase items for our care packages, we picked up a great big package of chocolate chips. These chocolate chips would later become our Reindeer Poop.

We made sure that each holiday tin we sent off inside our care packages contained one ziplock bag of reindeer poop (and one of snowman poop too!). We found some cute clip art for the baggies inserts and printed the clip art and the poems on each. We think these, along with the Snowman Poop would make great stocking stuffers as well. Feel free to steal the idea for your home or favorite service members this holiday season.

Reindeer Poop Poem:

I woke up with such a scare when I heard Santa call...
"Now dash away, dash away, dash away all!"
I ran to the lawn, and in the snowy white drifts,
those nasty reindeer had left "little gifts.
I got an old shovel and started to scoop
Neat little piles of Reindeer Poop.
But to throw them away seemed such a waste,
So I saved them, thinking you might like a taste!
As I finished my task, which took quite a while,
Old Santa passed by and he sheepishly smiled.
And I heard him exclaim as he rose to the sky
"Well, they're not potty trained, but at least they can fly!"

Wishing Our Troops Happy Holidays

One way is to register and support a service member one on one, the other is to send a simple message of support to us at "Messages at eMail Our Military dot com". Retailer Brings Holiday Cheer to Fisher Houses

By Sharon Foster
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2008 – More than 50 local Wal-Mart associates donated their time and tinsel Dec. 4 to bring holiday cheer to servicemembers recovering from wounds at Fisher Houses at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here and Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

Wal-Mart associates “decked the halls” for the two Fisher Houses and also presented a check for $280,000 at the Walter Reed location.

“Decorating the Fisher Houses was important for a number of reasons,” said E.R. Anderson, Wal-Mart regional media director. “First, Wal-Mart is committed to giving back to the communities where we operate. Second, we want to say ‘thank you’ to our servicemen and women for all they do for us. We also want to appreciate their families.”

Nationally, Wal-Mart Stores is donating $250,000 to the Fisher House Foundation -- $100,000 to support the purchase of gifts cards for unmet needs of families spending the holidays in a Fisher House, $95,000 in direct support to the houses, and $55,000 for fees associated with Hero Miles tickets to unite families during the holidays.

In the Washington area, Wal-Mart Foundation’s State Giving Program is donating an additional $30,000 to area Fisher Houses.

Fisher Houses are built on the grounds of major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers. They provide free lodging for military families to be close to loved ones during hospitalization.

James D. Weiskopf, executive vice president of communications at the Fisher House Foundation, said he is proud of the partnership with the world’s largest retailer.

“Community involvement and support is essential to the program,” Weiskopf said. “Supporting America's servicemen and women, and most especially those wounded or injured, is a duty for all Americans. Wal-Mart is a very patriotic, community-spirited corporation, and we are proud of our association.”

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2008

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2008
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we mourn the more than 2,400 Americans whose lives were lost in the surprise attack on our homeland that changed the course of history. Their service and sacrifice and the service and sacrifice of all our World War II veterans will be forever honored on this day by the citizens of a free and grateful Nation.

On December 7, 1941, the enemy nearly destroyed our Pacific Fleet, and the United States was forced into a long and terrible war. A generation of Americans stepped forward to fight for our country. Their message to America's enemies was clear: If you attack this country and harm our people, there is no corner of the Earth remote enough to protect you from the reach of our Nation's Armed Forces.

Following the war the United States worked to make our most bitter enemies into our closest friends through the transformative power of freedom. The joys of liberty are often secured by the sacrifices of those who serve a cause greater than self. To honor and recognize the sacrifice of our Armed Forces, I have designated nine sites as the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. This monument will preserve our history and help share this heritage with future generations. On this anniversary, we honor the heroes who risked and lost their lives for our security and freedom. Their selfless dedication exemplifies the great character of America and continues to inspire our Nation.

The Congress, by Public Law 103-308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as "National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 7, 2008, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. I encourage all Americans to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I urge all Federal agencies and interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff this December 7 in honor of those who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Not Too Late to Get Holiday Mail to the Troops

It's Not Too Late To Participate

Would you like to send a postcard, card or letter to our troops? How about sponsoring an entire 1 lb. package of holiday mail for just $5? It's not too late to do so. We've decided to extend the deadline to those of you who were so busy that time just slipped away from you.

Through the 7th Annual "Holiday Love" project you can send your cards, letters or notes to eMail Our Military and we’ll send them out in our holiday care packages to the troops. Everyone is welcome to participate!

Official Holiday Love Flyer

Get Everyone Involved!

Holiday Love is a great project for schools, churches, boy scouts, girl scouts, women's groups, clubs, etc. Get the kids involved in coloring pictures and making their own cards too! Teachers, this is a super class project!

Get everyone to bring in cards, postcards or write short notes. Place a drop box in your place of business to make participation easy! Remember, the more the merrier. Try to get everyone to contribute at least 1 card, postcard, note or letter.

Kids can make their own holiday cards too! Get your children's classrooms or schools involved. This is a great class project and the student drawings and cards are always appreciated by our troops.

Maybe you'd like to make a banner for our heroes. Use a vinyl tablecloth (try red, white or blue) and sharpies (or any permanent marker) and create a thank you or support banner. Have your friends, co-workers, family, church members, etc sign it with their message. You may see it appear on the eMOM Flickr photo page at a later date with our heroes holding it up!

Make a poster for our heroes. Take poster board (try red, white or blue) and colorful markers (sharpies are great for this) and create a thank you or support poster. Have your friends, kids, classroom, co-workers, family, church members, etc sign it with their message. You might see it appear on our site at a later date with our heroes holding it up! It's easy to ship too, just stick it in a mailing tube to us!

Shipping Information

Please send your holiday mail, checks and/or money orders made out to:

eMail Our Military
Holiday Love Campaign
Suite 344
8004 NW 154 Street
Miami Lakes, FL 33016

Try to get all your cards and letters in the mail by Monday, Dec. 11th so we have plenty of time to pack and ship to our troops. However, we will continue to pack and ship as packages arrive (provided we have the funds to do it). Anything left over will be shipped next year.

Become a Postage Patriot

You can be a Postage Patriot™ by sponsoring a 1 lb package of holiday mail to our troops for just $5! That's a whole lot of support for just $5 bucks. Click here to chip in.

Special Thanks:

To everyone who cared enough to spread the word via Twitter, Blogger, WordPress, Facebook, Jaiku and all the other social networks. If you helped, drop a comment so our readers can check out your blog or website too!

If you're reading this via email or in your feedreader, be sure to stop by and tell us your thoughts.

Postage Patriots Extended

We've extended our deadline in the hopes of meeting our Postage Patriots goal. It only made sense to do that since so many people send in their holiday cards and letters for the troops after the deadline.

With that being said, we've also decided to keep shipping the holiday mail we receive as it arrives so this holiday season for our troops will end when the mail stops arriving. Remember, every penny we receive will go directly to supporting the troops this holiday season with holiday cards and care packages.

You can send in your checks, money orders, or use ChipIn and PayPal to get eMOM to our goal. Every single dollar counts so do what you can and lead with your heart. It doesn't matter if you can't do $5, just do what you can. If you want to do more, please do!

We're already snapping photos of our packages incoming and outgoing just like we did last year and we know you will enjoy the hardwork we put into this project that YOU made possible. Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/emom/sets/72157603422810438/ )

We won't let you down and we won't let our troops down either. Please help us reach our goal!

Please send your holiday mail and or payments to:

Purple Heart Awardee Army Captain Robert Jose Yllescas, 31

Army Captain Rob Yllescas, 31, succumbed yesterday, to injuries he received from an IED in Afghanistan.

Captain Yllescas was awarded the Purple Heart by President Bush at the National Navel Medical Center in Bethesda MD.

He was seriously wounded about five weeks ago in an explosion in Afghanistan, losing both legs and suffering head injuries. His wife, Dena Yllescas said she still does not have a detailed account of how her husband was injured. She's been told that he was struck by an improvised explosive device while walking. He commanded B Troop, 6-4 Cavalry of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. Captain Rob Yllescas was on his third and final deployment after serving two stints in Iraq.

Please take a moment to say a prayer for his family and those left behind by his loss and if possible leave a comment with a kind word of support on their blog: http://yllescasfamily.blogspot.com/
