The 10 OPSEC Points

Within the Navy, the odds of making it through boot camp without hearing ‘Loose Lips Sink Ships’ are improbable. Though the slogan is old, it still embodies the basic principle of Operational Security, or OPSEC.

OPSEC (Operational Security) has been established by the D0D and has strict rules. It's broken down here to make it simple for everyone to understand and remember.

The 10 OPSEC Points:

  1. Don’t discuss current or future destinations, ports of call, or bases.
  2. Don’t discuss current or future operations or missions.
  3. Don’t discuss current or future dates and times of exercises or missions.
  4. Don’t discuss readiness issues and numbers.
  5. Don’t discuss specific training equipment.
  6. Don’t discuss people’s names, military occupation or operations.
  7. Don’t speculate about current or future operations.
  8. Don’t spread rumors about current, future, or past operations or movements.
  9. Don’t assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you; they are.
  10. Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC when online, using eMail and the Phone.
