May Updates and Information

We hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and we apologize for not being able to connect with you before then. With all the rain we've been experiencing in Florida we had a bit of a flood in the office. All's well now, it was a minor issue but enough of an issue to have us drying things out for a day.

To add to the office chaos we've been experiencing some connectivity issues with our Dells. We're working on the issues with Dell but it has definately put a crimp in our response time. Speaking of responses, please be sure that you add our domain eMailOurMilitary.com to your white lists, safe lists and ensure that it's one of your approved sites to visit and receive email from. We reply to all email in the order it's received but hear too many folks telling us that they didn't receive our emails. Spam catchers are a great tool but sometimes they catch the good with the bad. Please be sure to always check your spam filters and folders to help us help you connected with our troops.

Beginning in June The Today Show will be spotlighting organizations that are helping to support our troops. We were fortunate enough to speak with the show's organizers through our various new media connections and we're pleased to announce that we'll be listed on their site as a resource.

Launching June 1st is a project we're happy to collaborate with comedian Dan Smith on called Operation Laugh. We'll have more about that for you on Monday so stay tuned!

One of the best things you can do to help eMailOurMilitary.com support our troops is to tell your friends and family about us. Invite them to join and help us support our military.

If you use social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace (to name a few) then you'll be able to find us and connect with us there as well and we encourage you to do just that. Our sidebar has a running list of where you can find us.

Finally, we've been working long and hard on a new look for our site along with a super-powered database to help you support our troops more efficiently. We're hoping to debut this very soon so stay tuned.

If you aren't already subscribed to our blog then why not take a moment to do that now. Subscribe to Honor, Duty, eMail the way you like best.

Today is Armed Forces Day

Today is Armed Forces Day and the 2009 theme is United In Strength. That says it all doesn't it?

In the United States, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. The day was created in 1949, and was a result of the consolidation of the military services in the Department of Defense. It was intended to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Days, but observance of these days, especially within each particular service, continues to this day.

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense.

The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated by parades, open houses, receptions and air shows. Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May, and Armed Forces Week begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of May. Because of their unique training schedules, National Guard and Reserve units may celebrate Armed Forces Day/Week over any period in May. The purpose of Armed Forces day is to honor Americans serving in the five services - the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Action Alert - Over 300 New Troops to Support

Heads up! This is what we like an action alert. We've got over 300 new military service members in need of morale boosting support and we're looking for folks who can send cards, letters and email to them. If this is something you'd be interested in doing, read on.

[ May 7th, 2009] Some service members have provided us with their email address and mailing address, others just an email address and others only provided a mailing address so signing on to support them means that you'll support them no matter what the contact method is. We can't take special requests at this time. We want everyone to receive support so we hope you'll understand.

To sign up and support these new service members please take a moment to fill out our registration form. Please reference "300" in the "How did you learn about us" section.

eMOM members, to participate in this project please send your request to our Military Service Member Coordinator via the usual methods. Do not use the registration or contact form.

Some of the troops you'll be supporting are the Soldiers, Sailors and Marines of:

  • FOB Diamondback
  • FOB Warhorse
  • 463d MP Co
  • II MEF
  • 1st CEB RC Co
  • 1/5 H & S Co
  • USS Ramage (DDG 61)
  • USS Barry (DDG 52)

Not sure what to say to a service member? Don't worry, here are a few basic tips to get you started:

  1. Introduce yourself - Use your card or letter to tell your service member a little about you, your likes, hobbies and interests

  2. Tell your service member you appreciate their service to our country

  3. Say "Thank You" - A simple thank you goes a long way

  4. Include your contact information if you'd like a reply

Remember, keep your correspondence positive and upbeat at all times. You're email or letters don't have to be long just heartfelt.

Tweet To ReMIND and Support Our Wounded Warriors

From Bob Woodruff

Dear Friends,

We all have people in our lives we consider heroes. On Tuesday, May 12, all of us at the Bob Woodruff Foundation would appreciate your support and participation in the TweetToRemind campaign by publishing a short blog post or tweet telling us who your hero is.

After I was severely injured while reporting on location in Iraq, my family and I realized we had a unique opportunity to reach out and help many of our nation's injured heroes. In January 2008, my wife Lee and I started ReMIND.org, an organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for service members injured in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as their families. Our current project is the TweetToRemind campaign, which asks individuals and corporations to donate $5.25 or more in an effort to raise $1.65 million by the end of the Memorial Day weekend.

I have so many heroes in my life who have affected me in so many ways. But after what my family and I went through more than three years ago, my greatest heroes are the doctors, nurses, medics, soldiers, pilots and others who risk their lives on a daily basis to save injured soldiers and bring them back to their communities. They did it for me, and my family and I can never thank them enough.

This is what I ask of you: on Tuesday, May 12 post a simple blog or tweet answering, "Who is your hero?" and asking them to do the same. Please link to your blog post from your Twitter account.

I hope you find it in your heart to support this effort on May 12 and throughout the campaign which ends on Memorial Day, May 25th.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Bob Woodruff

"Support Our Troops" is no longer a slogan. It's an action.

The 10 OPSEC Points

Within the Navy, the odds of making it through boot camp without hearing ‘Loose Lips Sink Ships’ are improbable. Though the slogan is old, it still embodies the basic principle of Operational Security, or OPSEC.

OPSEC (Operational Security) has been established by the D0D and has strict rules. It's broken down here to make it simple for everyone to understand and remember.

The 10 OPSEC Points:

  1. Don’t discuss current or future destinations, ports of call, or bases.
  2. Don’t discuss current or future operations or missions.
  3. Don’t discuss current or future dates and times of exercises or missions.
  4. Don’t discuss readiness issues and numbers.
  5. Don’t discuss specific training equipment.
  6. Don’t discuss people’s names, military occupation or operations.
  7. Don’t speculate about current or future operations.
  8. Don’t spread rumors about current, future, or past operations or movements.
  9. Don’t assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you; they are.
  10. Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC when online, using eMail and the Phone.

For more on OPSEC you can read OPSEC Is Everyone’s Responsibility

MCPON Honors Navy Spouses' Service, Sacrifice

090501-N-9134V-017 NORFOLK (May 1, 2009) Chief Hospital Corpsman Tony Ward greets his family on the pier as the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG 103) arrives at its new homeport at Naval Station Norfolk. The ship was commissioned Saturday, April 25 in Charleston, S.C. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Flordeliz Valerio/Released)

From Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Rick D. West

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- On the occasion of Military Spouse Appreciation Day May 8, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) (SS/SW) Rick D. West sent the following message to the fleet, including Navy spouses and families:

"When I took this job in December, I made a promise to every one of you that I would do everything in my power to ensure you are supported, that you have the quality of life you deserve and when your loved ones are deployed, our Navy will take care of you when you need it.

These were not just words, and I will say the same thing to every family member or Sailor I meet. This is very important to me because I know of the sacrifices our families make so that our Sailors can defend this nation.

The life of a Navy spouse is unlike any other. We ask that you give us your husbands and wives for months at a time. We ask you to support them because nothing is more important to their peace of mind. We ask you to understand the weekend watches, the deployments, the missed holidays and birthdays. You continue to give and ask for very little in return.

We are grateful for that, but we owe you a huge debt. We owe you an equal amount of understanding for the sacrifices you make, and I can promise that you have that from Navy leadership.

May 8 is Military Spouse Appreciation Day and, we will pause a moment that day to thank you appropriately. Please take my word on this when I tell you the appreciation we have for what you do goes far beyond one day per year. Thank you for your continued support of your Sailor, our Navy and our nation.

HOOYAH!"

Thank You from SgtMaj McKenna

Please accept my sincere appreciation for all you are doing in supporting the men and women who wear your country’s uniform. Anything you all would like to send to the Marines, Sailors and Soldiers assigned to this command I will ensure the packages get to them. I cannot even begin to explain how much it means to the Marines, sailors and soldiers to receive something from home. When I hear of projects like the ‘Care package rally’ at home it solidifies my faith that we live in the greatest country in the world and what makes it so grand are her citizens. Thank you all for your continued support.

eMOM Registration Information Required

It has come to my attention that there are people who do not wish to go through the registration process in full to become eMOM members and support our troops.

Unlike some other organizations, eMail Our Military requires that troop supporters provide basic information before they are given access to membership and our service members' support information.

As stated on our website and registration form, for the safety and security of our military personnel, we ask that registrants kindly take a moment to fill out our membership registration form in full. In other words, before you can become an approved member and receive the name, rank, address and email address for a service member you must register with your name, address, phone # and email address.

Because eMOM members DIRECTLY support the U.S. effort to end terrorism and are corresponding and supporting our deployed troops one-on-one, we believe that anyone who wishes to become a member won't mind sharing some basic information.

Having this information ensures that our military service members are protected in case problems should arise.

If you believe this is too much information, we disagree. When it comes to the safety and security of our military service members, you can NEVER be too safe.

eMail Our Military and it's officers will cooperate fully with the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, the FBI and all other appropriate governmental authorities to investigate all violations if our site or service is used in any way with the intent to harm our military service members or civilian volunteers, or you send anything illegal and/or prohibited.

Regrettably, if someone is unwilling to share some basic information, to ensure the safety and security of our military personnel, they will not be able to receive basic information on the service members we support.

If there are some extenuating circumstances involved and you do not have all of the required information but can provide other means of verification I would be happy to discuss the matter with you to find a solution that enables you to become an active member supporting our military.

At eMOM, we want everyone to have the ability to support our troops and every service member to receive it.

For your convenience our privacy policy can be viewed on our website at: http://www.emailourmilitary.com/privacy.htm

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please don't hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Trish Forant
President

Patriotic Quote of the Day

"And when you have served among good people, fellow Marines, some of whom you came to love with the same intensity as you do your own family, there are few others you will meet in your lifetime who can ever gain that same level of trust and respect." - Senator Jim Webb, "A Time to Fight."

Military Appreciation Month Kicks Off

May 1st is the kick off for Military Appreciation Month. At eMOM we celebrate, support and appreciate our Military every day, but May is the perfect time for us all to come together for for 31 days to show our troops how much we appreciate what they do.

Here are some great ways to do something special for our Military:

  1. Send a postcard from your hometown to our troops
  2. Send cards to hospitalized veterans, wounded warriors or those living in veteran homes
  3. Fly your flag at home and at the office
  4. Urge your community to fly the flag from May 1 through Flag Day, June 14
  5. Support your favorite military support organization monitarily
  6. Thank a Veteran
  7. Shake a military service member's hand
  8. Support our military using your blog, twitter or other social networking accounts
  9. Write a guest post on why you think it's important to support our troops
  10. Post a message of support to our troops on our Facebook Group, FanPage or Cause
  11. Make a tribute video to our troops and upload it to YouTube (Let us know when you do!)
  12. Create a video message thanking our troops using Seesmic, Vimeo, 12 seconds, etc. (Let us know when you do!)
  13. Design a button or badge to be used on blogs and website and we may feature it here
  14. Hold a troop support party where you and your friends dress in RW&B and write letters of thanks to our troops. Snap photos and we'll blog them and include them on Flickr. Send your letters to us and we'll send them to our troops!
  15. Visit your local USO and ask how you can volunteer
  16. Volunteer with eMail Our Military
  17. Volunteer with you favorite military support or veteran's organization
  18. Volunteer at your local VFW
  19. Visit Veterans hospitals
  20. Start a welcoming/send off committee at your local airport for returning or deploying troops
  21. Have your church host a veterans appreciation day
  22. Get your company to support the troops with military discounts or freeebies
  23. Take an ad out in your community newspaper stating you support your hometown heroes
  24. Encourage your local radio and news stations to recognize National Military Appreciation Month
  25. Offer a military spouse a helping hand while their husband or wife is deployed
  26. Create a large poster in appreciation signed by your company, school or church and it to your nearest VA medical center
  27. Call or email your representative and ask them to sponser the new National Military Appreciation Month Concurrent Resolution (H.CON.RES 84)
  28. Send us your ideas for supporting our military and we might add them to the list

These are just a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing. No matter what you do or how you do it, just have a great time showing our troops how much they are appreciated!

This Is What Brothers Are For

Every Friday is "Video Friday" and we'll try to give you a great video that gives you something to think about. We hope they'll inspire you to reach out to a service member who might be far from home and missing his or her family.

The house was like a tomb.
I was hiding in my room.
As my brother made his way on down the hall.

I didn't want to say goodbye.
And I was trying to deny there was a war,
And that he got the call.
I watched him from my window
Walking down the drive.
Then I ran down the stairway
Through the front door and I cried

You come back you hear?
And I let him see my tears
I said I'll give you my rookie of DiMaggio.
I'll do anything you want,
Clean your room, or wash your car.
I'll do anything so long as you don't go.
But he said, this is what brothers are for.

Well I have my heroes,
But the one I love the most
Taught me how to hunt and swing a bat.
And I wrote him every night,
I said I miss our pillow fights,
But lately I just wonder where you're at.

Sometimes freedom makes it hard to live.
When it takes things from you that you don't want to give.

I said you come back you hear?
I miss you being near.
Laugh and fish down in the maple grove.

I'll do anything you want.
There must be someone I can call,
And just maybe they would let you come back home.
But he wrote, this is what brothers are for.

I may never have to face the anger of those guns,
Or lie cold and wounded in my blood,
Or know the sacrifice and what it must of cost
For him to love me that much.

Well, it had been two years,
And I held back my tears
When I saw him in that wheel chair on the shore.

And as I ran and held him tight,
That's when he looked me in the eye
And said I'm sorry that you have to push me home.
And I said hey, this is what brothers are for.
