Tips for Mailing Our Military

eMail Our Military is military owned and operated so we understand how important support is to our troops. Here are a few tips we've come up with to make corresponding with the service members you support a little easier.

FOR THOSE MAILING OUR MILITARY:

1. Introduce yourself
2. Include information about you like: age, state, hobbies and interests
3. Consider including a photo of yourself and/or family (In good taste)
4. Provide your contact information if you would like replies
5. Keep your correspondence upbeat
6. Let them know you would love to hear from them
7. Ask about your service member’s hobbies, interests, favorites, family, etc.
8. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope
9. Send one card or letter every week
10. Don’t send anything sexually explicit*

We recommend that you do NOT wait for a reply before sending your next letter. Postal deliveries do not happen daily, they are usually weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly. U.S. Mail, at times, takes an average 2 -3 weeks to arrive at its destination.

To ensure that we can keep in touch with these service members at all times, enclose a note or a 3 x 5 index card inside any care packages you may send with the following information: "Please send all address changes and requests to eMail Our Military, 8004 NW 154 Street, Suite 344, Miami Lakes, FL. 33016

Public Relations / New Media Intern Needed

eMail Our Military (eMOM) is seeking a Public Relations / New Media Intern to assist in providing support in media relations both new and traditional, including social media, online, radio, newsprint, television and all other promotions.

Area of Focus: Military, Military Families, Community Service and Volunteering, Non-Profit, Charitable Organizations
Language(s): English is required
In Office or Work from Home: Either is suitable
Hours: Please dedicate 15 hours per week (3 hours per day)
Paid or unpaid: Unpaid

Interns will gain work experience in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The intern must be willing to work hard to build a portfolio of experience, have an interest and or background in the marketing, public relations, new media, or communications field. Hours are flexible, but we ask that interns dedicate a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Internship Duties at eMOM May Includes:

1. Search all print media for eMail Our Military (eMOM) content
2. Developing/editing public relations materials
3. Assist with writing press releases, captions, newsletters, ads and public service announcements.
4. Work with the CEO and the Web development team to develop website contents
5. Assist with the promotion of upcoming collaborations, campaigns projects and events.
6. Create and update media lists.
7. Place calls to media for follow-up on releases.
8. Help develop and conduct outreach activities to blogs and bloggers
9. Manage and maintain current multi-platform media listings

Internship Requirements Include:

1. Previous public relations, marketing and new media experience preferred
2. Strong writing skills, and fluency in English (other languages welcome)
3. Strong communication skills
4. Strong computer skills
5. Detail oriented, mature attitude, organized, self-driven and self-sufficient
6. Working knowledge of social media
7. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel. (Familiarity of Microsoft Outlook would be a plus)

Operation Soldier Care - Update 1

Operation Soldier Care is in full swing and we're already half way to reaching our goal of collecting $550 to purchase care packages for our troops this summer.

Last year $1.5 million dollars in Mary Kay products were donated to our troops and now you can join in to send Mary Kay Care Packages to our troops through eMail Our Military!

Through Operation Soldier Care, every Mary Kay Care package purchased for our troops will be matched by a second care package from Nancy Sutherland, Mary Kay Sales Director! That's double the support for our troops.

Nancy and I connected via Twitter (she's @NancyMK) and she suggested we team up to help get support to our troops. What a perfect combination too. Nancy has all the wonderful Mary Kay products and the ability to put together these wonderful care packages and we have a database full of service members in need. What could be better?

You have the ability, through eMail Our Military, to help make a difference even if you don’t know a specific service member.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE IN IRAQ

The average temperatures in Iraq range from higher than 48 degree C (120 degrees Fahrenheit!) in July and August to below freezing in January. A majority of the rainfall occurs from December through April and is more abundant in the mountainous region and may reach 100 centimeters a year in some places

The summer months are marked by two kinds of wind phenomena: The southern and southeasterly sharqi, a dry, dusty wind with occasional gusts to eighty kilometers and hour, occurs from April to early June and again from late September through November. The shamal, a steady wind from the north and northwest, prevails from mid-June to mid-September. Very dry air which accompanies the shamal permits intensive sun heating of the land surface but also provides some cooling effect. Dust storms accompany these winds and may rise to heights of several thousand meters, causing hazardous flying conditions and closing airports for brief periods of time.

Extremes of temperatures and humidity, coupled with the scarcity of water, will affect both men and equipment. During dry season, clouds of dust caused by vehicle movement will increase detection capabilities in desert regions. Flash flooding in wadis and across roads will hinder traffic ability and supply efforts during the rainy season. Clear, cloudless skies make air superiority a prerequisite to successful offensive operations throughout Iraq. Air operations may be reduced during windy season. The Iraqi climate is similar to that of the extreme southwestern United States with hot, dry summers, cold winters, and a pleasant spring and fall. Roughly 90% of the annual rainfall occurs between November and April, most of it in the winter months from December through March. The remaining six months, particularly the hottest ones of June, July, and August, at approximately 102 degrees Fahrenheit are dry. The influence of the Persian Gulf on the climate of Iraq is very limited. Near the gulf the relative humidity is higher than in other parts of the country.

GREAT IDEA

Great idea! :-) Having been a US Army Soldier in Kuwait and in Iraq, personal hygiene items and toiletries are such a luxury. To receive a Mary Kay care package would have been a DREAM for me! I highly recommend this because it is really something useful and much appreciated - even for male Soldiers - a HUGE morale booster. When I sent my husband, who was deployed in the Middle East, special items for his skin he was in heaven and so, so happy!!

Green Care for Troops

Lawn and landscape maintenance might be something you take for granted but it becomes a definite hardship when a family's major breadwinner is on active duty away from home. GreenCare for Troops is designed to show the green industry's concern for this situation, helping affected families maintain their homes' green spaces.

To date, Project EverGreen has signed up more than 6,000 military families and over 1,300 lawn/landscape contractors and volunteers to assist in this effort. If you are interested in helping a family in your area, please take a moment to complete our online application.

While Project Evergreen's GreenCare for Troops program continues its mission to help our military families, we hope that the future will bring PEACE to everyone.

Thanks for the letter. I needed that though I am not yet deployed and am not sure when we will be. I am in the Indiana National Guard and have been in for 11 years and have 9 to go before I can retire which will break my heart. I love being in the service because I know that if something happened I would be able to defend this great country and my family will be safe including all the people in it even though I don’t know most of them. I really love the fact that there are people who are willing to help us when we are doing what we love to do.

When I was stationed in Korea I wasn’t getting much mail. I did get a letter from a kid who was in kindergarten and he said thanks and it really made me feel like I was doing something for the good of this great country. I am going to close this letter with a big thank you. So, thank you and God bless you!!!

Platoon: Did you know that a platoon is four squads - generally three rifle squads and one weapons squad, normally armed with machine guns and anti-tank weapons? Lieutenants lead most platoons, and the second-in-command is generally a sergeant first class.

Final Salute, Review By Andy Valadez


I will be completing the final chapters of "Final Salute: A Story of Unfinished Lives" today. I received this book from Trish Forant, founder of eMailOurMilitary.com (a website resource that makes it easy to e-mail and serve those on the front lines of battle). She was assisting Freelance Journalist Becky of "Deep Muck Big Rake", via blog promotion raising awareness for the stories written by Pulitzer Prize winner journalist Jim Sheeler of the Rocky Mountain News.

This book serves as a reminder of our American journey. It provides a snapshot of war and freedom's cost, more recently the Iraq and Global War on Terror. The reader goes on a somber mission with those responsible for notifiying next of kin and the families who have lost loved ones in battle, in war. We meet each family, get to know them, and the son, husband, and father who chose to serve our country and died carrying out that duty.

We follow Major Beck of the U.S. Marines from the dreaded knock on the door in the late night, to the final resting place, and the hurt that families endure afterwards. Major Beck has gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that each of his families and other's receive the "Final Salute" and ongoing support these families need and deserve. His attention to detail in every family request knows no bounds.

Few in America are close to war and for over 200 years, America continues to sacrifice for the sake our own nation and other's around the world (history proves that other countries and governments benefit from our success). Over 1.5 million service women and men have given their lives for the sake of independence.

For me, this book brought back the honor, respect, and solemnity that we should come to celebrate in appreciation of our hard won freedom. These chapters, these lives will make you cry. In fact, it made me remember Lance Corporal Timothy McMahaon, USMC and the 241 other servicemen who were killed in the Beirut, Lebanon barracks bombing of 1983. Tim was a friend of mine and inspired my life's focus. This book made me remember him and his family and identify with the families I read about.

The 4th of July is a celebration of freedom (it is not a time of sadness), a celebration of the modern day miracle that we call America. Freedom is not guaranteed, we have a chance to renew each day, each year, each decade, and hopefully another 100 years. To all our military serving in harms way, we salute you on 4th of July and rejoice in the American military and the American story. Take time today to look at an American flag blowing in the wind and render a salute and hopefully it will never be final. Get caught up in THE VORTEX!

I hope everyone here in the US enjoys their long 4th of July holiday weekend. We’ll be heading to a couple of parties with some fireworks and sparklers so I know the kids will enjoy themselves immensely and we’ll be making sure they don’t burn themselves on the sparklers.

Since we no longer have a tree to put our US Flag on, I’ll have to do an extra patriotic blog post!

By now most people around the world know that July 4th is when we here in the US celebrate our Independence as a country. We celebrate our freedom by getting together with friends to watch fireworks.

I’m not sure what our troops overseas do on July 4th or even if they will get to see fireworks in Iraq, Afghanistan, or elsewhere. I bet they miss their home and would look forward to communicating with people back home.

Vintage 48 Star Flag Has Flown over Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan


AFGHANISTAN (July 4, 2008) Sailors from Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan hold a vintage American flag with 48 stars, which was flown over Camp Eggers in Kabul, Afghanistan, to commemorate "Fourth of July" celebrations at the camp. The 48 star flag was flown in the United States from July 4, 1912 through July 3, 1959. Retired Navy Cmdr. Joseph Agra III acquired the flag in 2000 after a fisherman retrieved it from the water off the coast of the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. The Fate of the 56 Who Signed


On July 4th, 1776, fifty-six men signed a document declaring their views and beliefs on how a people should be governed. Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.

Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged:

"For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."


They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted...We shouldn't.

So, take a couple of minutes as you're enjoying your 4th of July holiday and all that freedom brings with it, and silently thank these patriots. It's not much too ask for the price they paid.

A Bit of 4th of July History

Independence Day also known as 4th of July is the birthday of the United States of America. It is celebrated on July 4th each year in the United States. It is the anniversary of the day on which the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress - July 4, 1776.

The day they announced to the world that the 13 colonies no longer belonged to Great Britain. Independence Day was first observed in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776

On July 4, 1777, the night sky of Philadelphia lit up with the blaze of bonfires. Candles illuminated the windows of houses and public buildings. Church bells rang out load, and cannons were shot from ships breaking the silence. The city was celebrating the first anniversary of the founding of the United States.

The Fourth of July soon became the main patriotic holiday of the entire country. Veterans of the Revolutionary War made a tradition of gathering on the 4th to remember their victory. In towns and cities, the American flag flew; shops displayed red, white, and blue decorations; and people marched in parades that were followed by public readings of the Declaration of Independence. In 1941, Congress declared July 4th a federal legal holiday.

New Amendment Benefits Military

New Amendment Benefits Military Service Members

On January 1, an amendment to the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act took effect. The act, also known as the “Lemon Law,” was changed so that it now protects all military personnel stationed in California.

The Lemon Law protects consumers who buy or lease a motor vehicle that is still under manufacturer’s warranty. If the vehicle has recurring problems affecting the use, value or safety of the vehicle and the vehicle manufacturer is unable to fix the problem, the Lemon Law requires the manufacturer to either repurchase or replace the vehicle at the consumer’s option.

Prior to January 2008, the California Lemon Law only protected consumers who purchased vehicles in California. The new amendment however, allows military service members to qualify for relief using the California Lemon Law even if their vehicle was purchased in a different state.

Service members can file a claim if the vehicle manufacturer sells vehicles in California, and the service member is stationed in California at the time of the vehicle purchase or at the time in which the Lemon Law action is filed.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter released the following Independence Day message to the fleet:

"Two hundred thirty-two years ago in Philadelphia, 56 patriots signed a Declaration of Independence -- a document spelling out their grievances against King George III and explaining why they felt impelled to separate from Great Britain.

This remarkable document is a civics lesson all its own -- even declaring why governments are instituted among men, deriving their powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundations on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.

Governments exist to secure our rights; the people reserve the right to choose their own leaders; the people are sovereign; consent of the governed is a fundamental principle -- these are the founding ideas that set our nation on a course that has led to the greatest success story the world has ever known.

Our founding fathers believed that some things were worth fighting for. Two hundred thirty-two years later, we still believe that our rights and our liberties must be defended. Over the course of those 232 years, this nation has found, time and time again, that her citizens were willing to step forward and answer the call of duty to defend the blessings of liberty as set forth in our founding document. This Fourth of July, let us take a moment to reflect on the meaning of our independence, and on what is required to preserve it. I salute each and every one of you for your sacrifice and service, and extend my sincere thanks to your families as well, whose strong support is critical to our success. Your dedication to duty makes our freedom possible, and the American people are grateful for your noble efforts to keep our country safe, particularly now during this time of peril. You are worthy heirs to the patriots who fought for our independence in 1776, and I am honored to serve you as your Secretary."

Division: Did you know that divisions perform major tactical operations for the corps and can conduct sustained battles and engagements? One division is made up of at least three brigades with between 10,000 and 20,000 soldiers. Divisions are normally commanded by major generals. Types of divisions include light infantry, armored and mechanized infantry, airborne and air assault.

"The Fourth of July holiday is traditionally a time best spent with family and friends as we celebrate our nation's birthday and democracy itself. During your well earned time off this week, please take a few moments to consider the privilege of living in a free society and the kind of sacrifice required to ensure that freedom.


Many of you will be driving our nation's freeways, anxious to return home or travel to see friends and loved ones. No matter the length of the trip, travel during the holidays carries with it a great deal of risk that must be managed.

If you are a motorcyclist, take special precautions. The numbers of deaths and injuries are rising this year, especially on sport bikes. Understand the dangers involved with your machine. Until you do, you are an accident waiting to happen.

Shipmates, few places in the world will be more dangerous than the highways during this holiday. I ask that you use common sense and take the same kind of precautions while driving that you would before any of the hazardous work you do at your commands.

Since 2000, the Navy lost an average of one Sailor in a motor vehicle accident and one Sailor in a recreational incident each 4th of July holiday. That may seem low, or even acceptable. Let me assure you it is not. A single loss of life is one too many. The family of that Sailor will never consider their loved one an acceptable statistic, and I feel the same.

I believe the safety of our Sailors and their families, even while on liberty, is a leadership responsibility. I expect our chiefs and first class petty officers to be involved with every aspect of a Sailors' trip planning. Ensuring the well being of our men and women in uniform is not micro management. It's good leadership. Exercise it.

Shipmates, I'm proud to serve with each of you. Enjoy your holiday. Celebrate with the rest of our great nation, but do so intelligently.

Your families will appreciate you arriving a few hours later than planned if it means you and your loved ones get there safely."
